Trains traditionally carried life into the Rocky Mountains and they continue to do so today. Many people take trains from Durango to Silverton not only for purposes of travel, but also to experience the ride and to see the landscape up close, a view made possible only by train. This program makes it possible for everyone to learn the story behind one of Colorado's great trains, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a federally designated National Historic Landmark, which has seen continuous use of steam locomotives since 1881. Next, through interviews with conductors, engineers and travelers, we get a glimpse of miniature riding steam engines created by members of the Colorado Line Steamers Club, a non-profit organization of people who are interested in building and operating large scale model railroad equipment. Then we hop aboard the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, a narrow gauge heritage railroad that travels between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. Running over the 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass, which is the highest point reached by any passenger railway in the United States, this train is the most spectacular example of steam-era mountain railroading in North America.
