Ryan Dean West is back to his boarding school antics in this bitingly funny sequel to Winger, which Publishers Weekly called g2salternately hilarious and painful, awkward and enlighteningg3s (Publishers Weekly, starred review). It{u2019}s his last year at Pine Mountain, and Ryan Dean should be focused on his future, but instead, he{u2019}s haunted by his past. His rugby coach expects him to fill the roles once played by his lost friend, Joey, as the rugby team{u2019}s stand-off and new captain. And somehow he{u2019}s stuck rooming with twelve-year-old freshman Sam Abernathy, a cooking whiz with extreme claustrophobia and a serious crush on Annie Altman{u2014}aka Ryan Dean{u2019}s girlfriend, for now, anyway. Equally distressing, Ryan Dean{u2019}s doodles and drawings don{u2019}t offer the relief they used to. He{u2019}s convinced N.A.T.E. (the Next Accidental Terrible Experience) is lurking around every corner{u2014}and then he runs into Joey{u2019}s younger brother Nico, who makes Ryan Dean feel paranoid that he{u2019}s avoiding him. Will Ryan Dean ever regain his sanity? (less)

For three decades, David Rivard has written from deep within the skin of our times. With Standoff, he asks an essential question: In a world of noise, of global anxiety and media distraction, how can we speak to each other with honesty? These poems scan the shifting horizons of our world, all the while swerving elastically through the multitude of selves that live inside our memories and longings--"all those me's that wish to be set free at dawn." The work of these poems is a counterweight to the work of the world. It wants to deepen the mystery we are to ourselves, stretching toward acceptance and tenderness in ways that are hard-won and true, even if fleeting. (less)

"On July 7, 2016, hundreds of protesters gathered in Dallas after the shooting of two black men-Philando Castile and Alton Sterling-by white policemen. One hundred Dallas police officers stood guard. At around nine p.m., a gunman opened fire into the lineof officers from behind. Five were killed and a dozen more injured. Senior Cpl. Larry Gordon, a black twenty-one year department veteran, managed to keep the shooter talking, in part by bonding with him, to buy the SWAT officers enough time to come up with a strategy to take him out-one that was extremely controversial and unprecedented on American soil. Thompson's intimate portrait of the lives of the shooter and the hostage negotiator, as well as the officers, the black surgeon who operated on them, and their families, gets to the heart of the deeply pressing issue of race and policing in our country. In the aftermath of the shooting, police forces and white and black communities all over the country were left grappling with questions of who our policeforce protects, what constitutes a threat, and who is entitled to physical safety or self-defense in this country"-- (less)
