Iago (Frank Finlay), an officer in the Venetian army and ensign to the Moorish general Othello (Laurence Olivier), bitterly resents the appointment of a younger soldier Cassio (Derek Jacobi) as Othello's lieutenant. He and his friend Roderigo (Robert Lang) maliciously bait Brabantio (Anthony Nicholls), an old senator, with the news that his daughter Desdemona (Maggie Smith), has just secretly married the Moor. Before the Council Chamber, the old man accuses Othello of abducting his daughter.. The Moor passionately denies this and Brabantio retracts when Desdemona affirms her unwavering loyalty to her husband. Othello is ordered to defend Cyprus, of which he is made Governor, against the Turks and entrusts Desdemona to Iago and his wife Emilia (Joyce Redman). Iago assures Roderigo, who is secretly in love With Desdemona, that she will not love Othello for long. He makes a private pledge to discredit Cassio by sowing suspicions in the Moor's mind about his (catalogs) relationship with Desdemona. In Cyprus, the people celebrate a resounding victory against the Turks. Othello is the hero of the day. Iago, who brought Desdemona from Venice, encourages his fellow-officers to be merry thus inciting Cassio and Montano (Edward Hardwicke) to a drunken brawl. When Montano is seriously hurt, Iago sends for Othello, and loses no time in blaming Cassio. Othello promptly dismisses Cassio. Iago's plan has begun to work, He advises the ever-trusting Cassio to seek Desdemona's assistance in regaining Othello's favour. Emilia arranges a meeting between them.. Desdemona promises to intercede on his behalf. Iago sees to it that Othello arrives just in time lo find her in earnest conversation with Cassio. Iago subtly arouses the Moor's jealousy - and seals Cassio's fate by suggesting that Desdemona's loyalty would only fail the test if she were to plead for the young soldier. Othello's sudden moodiness, when they are alone together, causes Desdemona some anxiety. Thinking him unwell, she dabs his forehead with an embroidered handkerchief, his gift to her.
