British soldiers and sailors captured Benin, exiled its king and annexed the territory. They also made off with some of Africa{u2019}s greatest works of art. This is the story of the {u2018}Benin Bronzes{u2019}: their history before the British took them, their fate since 1897, and the intense debate about their future. When they were first displayed in London their splendour and antiquity challenged the prevailing view of Africa as a continent without culture or history. They are now amongst the most admired and valuable artworks in the world. But seeing the Benin Bronzes in the British Museum today is, in the words of one Benin City artist, like {u2018}visiting relatives behind bars{u2019}. A feature length documentary that follows two WWII veterans and a used car salesman across the globe in search of their buried wartime treasures. During WWII, Darrel was stationed in Europe. Andrew was in the Philippines. In the chaos of combat, they stole valuable treasures and hid them overseas before returning to civilian life in America. Sixty years later back in America, both men have gone blind with little hope of ever recovering their goods. Both want to recover the treasures that they feel are their own, but with their health failing, they need Lance's help to travel halfway around the world to find them. So with time, distance and the odds against them, Lance throws himself into their dubious quests to unearth the past, laying bare family secrets and dark wartime histories in the process. (less)
