In a world that is rapidly descending into chaos, Frey and Rafi are twin sisters, but few people know of Frey's existence, because she has been raised to be her sister's body double and lethal bodyguard, while Rafi has been raised to further the family's political power--but when their father sends Frey in her sister's place as collateral in a tricky deal, Col, the son of a rival leader, gets close enough to begin to suspect something, and Frey must decide whether to deal with him violently or finally assume her own identity. A polysexual vaudeville playing promiscuously with melodramatic intrigue, camp and intellectual gamesmanship, IMPOSTORS remains as unclassifiable as it was in 1979.. Its slippery "plot" centers on the romance between besotted Peter and elusive Tina. She's a faithless bisexual and beauteous onstage assistant to lookalike magicians Mikey and Chuckie (stage legend Charles Ludlam of Manhattan's Ridiculous Theatrical Company) who, for their part, inhabit opposite poles of the Kinsey Scale. They've also purportedly left behind a swath of murder victims "as wide as the Nile," mysterious bits of Egyptology, including Filmclips from THE MUMMY, also figures here. (less)
