Born into a wealthy, plantation-owning family, George Washington grew up in privilege. He quickly rose in the ranks of the Continental Army until, ultimately, he became its commander in chief. Committed to the ideals of republicanism, he led the army to victory against Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War, and the United States of America was born. Discover how George Washington's inspired military leadership during the Revolutionary War guaranteed his election as the first President of the United States. Having fended for themselves for nearly two generations, many citizens in America's 13 colonies resented having to pay taxes to Great Britain-a country far away across the ocean. Protest against the British government grew into rebellion; rebellion quickly turned into war. Understanding the American Revolution describes the events that led up to the fight for an independent United States of America, the battles between British and Patriot forces, and what life was like during the conflict. "George Washington has always held a special place in Americans' hearts. Everyone can picture him as a white-haired statesman leading the new nation. But before he became our first president, he had already had enough adventures for several lifetimes. As a young man, he explored the wilderness of the American West, fought a disastrous military campaign against the French, pined for unrequited love, and retired. Then he became leader of the Continental Army. From the hardships and heartaches of his early years to the politics, betrayals, and victories of his public life, this is the whole story of one of America's most beloved Founding Fathers." -- Page [4] of cover. Between 1753, when he was commissioned as a major of Virginia militia, and 1775, when the second Continental Congress named him Commander-in-Chief of all colonial military forces, George Washington rose from anonymity as a minor landowner and surveyor to become America's first national hero. With little military training he led the thirteen fledgling colonies through six years of grueling war against formidable British forces, steered the proceedings of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, and served two terms as the first president of the United States. His accomplishments were so stunning and he was so revered that by the end of the war some of his generals urged him to install himself as king, an idea he looked upon with "abhorrence," calling the very thought "painful." Nor would he consider standing for a third term as president. (less)

He was bumbling, yet ambitious. He volunteered to serve his country, but insisted on being reimbursed for expenses. He owned five sets of dentures--even a set from pigs' teeth--but not one of them wooden. He was the most famous general of the Revolution, but a dismal tactician on the battelfield. His overall record was 3 wins, and 9 losses--but his retreat was brilliant. George Washington has been sculpted, painted, emulated and deified for more than 200 years, but few Americans have an idea who he was. This film is for all of us who were raised on myth and are curious about the truth. It explores our First President's relationship with his wife and other women (he was known to be extremely fond of their company); with his troops and the revolutionary cause; with his slaves and his fellow founding fathers. This film gives an unconventional look at the man who insisted that America be a democracy. (less)
